Jam

An example of Culture Jamming is where you take an advertisement, corporate identity or person and represent them with honesty (and a touch of humour) that highlights wrong doings or bad attitudes. You can have lots of fun and even be a little naughty. Methods and examples are too numerous to mention here so do a search on the web.

Who better to create culture jams than the people who create advertising?

Get your facts right

There is no point claiming something that is not true as it leaves you open to be successfully sued and look more than a little silly. The idea is to educate, so get your facts right.

Never make profit from culture jamming even if it is fundraising for a charity. Most laws concern money issues and the lawyers will have plenty of ammunition to sue you. The last thing a company wants is media attention highlighting their bad practices, so use the media to your advantage.

Jamming McDonalds

"If companies do choose to use oppressive laws against their critics then court cases do not have to only be about legal procedures and verdicts. They can be turned into a public forum and focus for protest, and for the wider dissemination of the truth.

This is what happened with McLibel... Maybe for the first time in history, a powerful institution (it just happened to be a fast-food chain, but in some ways could've been any financial organization or state department) was subject to lengthy, detailed and critical public scrutiny. That can only be a good thing" (Dave Morris).

McDonalds sued Helen Steel and Dave Morris. They faught back with the longest legal battle in British history and heavilly damaged MacDonalds international public image. For more info visit mcspotlight
