Creative Commons is an alternative to traditional copyright that allows the author to make their creative work available for others to legally build upon and share. The author selects from a range of options that allows others various rights to use the work.
The licences are backed up by a legal framework that has been ported to most legal jurisdictions including Australia. To create a sustainable future, we need to innovate to create change.... and fast.
The best way to do this is share ideas and innovation so others can build on it. Creative commons assists in speeding up the development of ideas, innovation and the application of these.
For example... Education organisations can use the content from the Natural Edge Project to create lesson plans and resources. They are free to distribute them to schools and to students. The schools and individual students can use these resources, customising and building upon the materials to meet their specific needs. They could then distribute these resources to other teachers and students with the same needs. Under traditional copyright licencing, this would be illegal, exposing the schools and students to legal action.
